Asher was born Aug. 8, 1921 in Manhattan, New York. He was the son of a publicist and actress named Betty Asher. His parents were Jewish, and his mother was a publicist for Judy Garland. After graduating from high school, he moved to Los Angeles.After his father’s death in Bill Asher 1937, he began writing short stories. He later collaborated with John Quine on “Leather Gloves” for Columbia. From there, he entered the world of television, working as a writer and director.

In the 1960s, Asher made a series of films based on a radio series called “Fibber McGee and Molly.” While the show failed to translate a radio show, it became a success for Asher. His Beach Party series starred Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. The films featured fading Hollywood stars as well as scantily-clad surfers.
